Since the 2022 syllabus, IB Economics is organised around nine key concepts — scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention. HL and SL share the same four units: introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy. HL adds extension topics and a third paper that is almost entirely quantitative.
Students arriving from IGCSE or a local curriculum are rarely caught out by the difficulty of the content. What catches them is that IB asks you to answer through the concepts. Reproducing a definition is the pass mark; identifying which key concept a situation illustrates, and supporting it with the data in front of you, is the difference between a 6 and a 7.
The IA is three commentaries, each built on a news article, each covering a different unit and a different key concept, each capped at 800 words. Marks are usually lost before any economics is written — the article is too old, too loosely connected to the syllabus, or simply cannot carry a meaningful diagram.
We start by choosing the article together and checking it can support a full diagrammatic analysis before anything is drafted. The first commentary takes the longest; most students write the remaining two on their own.

Yes. The IA carries real weight and is the only part of the year that can be improved slowly. We start at choosing the article and the matching syllabus section, because a poorly chosen article caps the mark no matter how well it is written, then read each draft against the criteria for diagrams, terminology and evaluation. The writing must be the student's own; we advise and annotate.
Paper 3 is the HL-only policy paper: it asks for calculation, for diagrams, and for a judgement supported by the numbers — a different rhythm from Papers 1 and 2. Preparation means drilling the calculation types by category until they are automatic, then practising the step from a computed result to an evaluation, which is where students who can do the arithmetic often stop short.
Beyond the extra paper, HL goes deeper and asks more of the calculation; SL concentrates on core concepts and diagrams. Tell us HL or SL at enrolment and the schedule follows that syllabus and paper structure.
One-to-one lesson times are agreed between both sides. Office hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 – 20:00 and Saturday 09:00 – 20:00, and a heavier run of lessons before exams can be arranged.
